Sovereign Developments, formerly Sovereign Homes, is a family-owned general contracting business in Windsor-Essex.
Sovereign Homes was originally started as a side project for Jim Sovran back in 1990. Working as a building inspector for the City of Windsor, he also helped build homes in his free time after work. Jim built many homes across Windsor-Essex over this time period, averaging around one custom home every couple of years.
Over the years he'd built strong relationships with tradesmen, city employees, and even some business partners he called friends. After retiring from the City of Windsor, Jim began receiving offers to build in the commercial space and was looking to expand Sovereign Homes from a side hustle to an established residential and commercial general contracting business.
Around the same time, his son Trent graduated with a degree and convinced Jim to take the side hustle full-time. Together they co-founded Sovereign Developments, a name that better reflected their broadened expertise and commitment to not just building structures, but developing communities.

Jim Sovran started his career at just 19 years old as a building inspector for the City of Windsor. Equipped with a diploma in civil engineering, he spent over three decades inspecting new and old builds, ensuring all construction standards were met. During this period, Jim started project managing custom homes as a side hustle but it wasn't until his retirement that he started building full time and co-formed what is Sovereign Developments. Now, fully committed to building, Jim leverages his extensive experience as a former building inspector to ensure each project not only meets but surpasses client expectations.
Fresh out of college, Trent wanted to help create an established business. He convinced Jim to step away from inspection work and take on building full-time, and from day one he set about turning what had been a side hustle into a real brand. Today Trent runs project management end-to-end, keeping every build on schedule and on budget, and also acts as our in-house designer, producing the renders and buildable plans that get every project off the ground.
As our commercial work continued to grow, it became clear we needed to scale faster than we could on our own. Partnering with Homes By Artisan gave us the capacity to take on more projects simultaneously without compromising the quality and attention to detail our clients expect.
